Crackdown Episode 8: The Cost of Cereal

The Story

Crackdown is a monthly podcast led by drug user activists and supported by research about drugs, drug policy and the drug war. The show covers the overdose crisis as a war, hosted by Garth Mullins. Most conversations about the opioid epidemic focus on men, who are dying at higher rates than women, but that can also mean that there isn’t as much funding for women-centred harm reduction. But on Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside, there’s SisterSpace-- North America’s first women-only safe consumption site.

Role

As lead producer of this episode, I met women who worked at the space and those who use it.  I also dug into the peer-reviewed research that underlines why sites like SisterSpace are so important. Co-writing the episode with host Garth, I worked out the narrative structure, produced field recordings, and edited the final mix.

Thank you for doing the work you do, this podcast sheds much needed insight into the many complex aspects of the fentanyl crisis and the impact of the criminalization and enforcement of drug use. Inspiring, political, and personal.
